Schedule Instagram Posts, Reels, Stories and Carousels
Updated · Multi Post Social guide
You can schedule Instagram posts, Reels and carousels of up to 20 images directly from Multi Post Social, with a first comment for hashtags and a grid preview that shows how the new post sits next to your last nine. Stories are supported too, some by direct publishing and some by reminder. This guide covers the account you need, the exact steps to connect, every limit the composer checks, and the mistakes that make an Instagram connection fail.
What you can schedule on Instagram
Feed posts with one image, carousels with up to 20 images or videos, Reels up to 90 seconds and image Stories all publish directly at the scheduled time. Video Stories and Stories with interactive stickers go out as reminders, because Instagram keeps those tools inside its own app. Each post can carry a caption, alt text per image, a location, a first comment and tagged collaborators. The composer shows a grid preview, so a carousel cover that clashes with the last post is easy to swap before it is live.

Account requirements
Instagram only lets tools publish to Business or Creator accounts, and the account must be linked to a Facebook Page. A personal account can be switched in the Instagram app under Settings, Account type and tools, in about a minute, and switching is free. Linking to a Page happens in the same place. If you skip this step, the connection may succeed but every scheduled Instagram post will fail with a permission error.
How to connect Instagram
- In the app, open Channels and press Connect channel, then choose Instagram.
- A Meta login window opens. Sign in with the Facebook account that manages the linked Page.
- Select the Instagram account and the Page it is linked to, and accept all requested permissions. Declining one, such as reading comments, removes that part of the product for this channel.
- Back in Multi Post Social, set the channel time zone and a posting schedule. Add the Planning hashtag group if you plan to use a first comment.
Permissions expire every 60 days or when you change your Facebook password. The channel then shows Needs reconnect; repeating the steps above restores it and the queue resumes.

What Instagram does not allow tools to do
Instagram keeps polls, question stickers, music, link stickers and some Story features inside its app, and no approved tool can add them. When you pick one of those formats, the composer marks the post as a reminder. At the scheduled time the mobile app sends a notification, saves the media to your phone, copies the caption and opens Instagram. The whole hand-off takes about twenty seconds, which is still faster than remembering on your own.
Best practices when you schedule Instagram posts
- Put the hook in the first line; only about 125 characters show before the More button.
- Keep 3 to 8 relevant hashtags and move them to the first comment to keep the caption clean.
- Use 4:5 images for feed posts; they take more screen space than squares.
- Add alt text to every image; it helps blind users and search.
- Mix formats: Reels for reach, carousels for saves, Stories for daily contact.
- Check the best-time heat map in analytics after two weeks and move slots toward your own peaks.
Connection errors and fixes
| Message | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Account type not supported | Personal account | Switch to Business or Creator in the Instagram app, then reconnect |
| No Page linked | Instagram not linked to a Facebook Page | Link a Page under Account type and tools, then reconnect |
| Token expired | 60-day permission ended or password changed | Press Reconnect and sign in again |
| Media not accepted | Wrong ratio, size or codec | Export as MP4 H.264, 9:16 or 4:5, under the size limit |
| Daily limit reached | Instagram caps API posts per 24 hours | Posts wait and publish the next day automatically |
Mobile tips
Shoot vertical, then share the clip from your camera roll straight into the composer in the Multi Post Social app. Turn on reminder notifications so Story hand-offs never slip. If the app shows a Needs reconnect banner, reconnecting from the phone works the same as on desktop.
Instagram rules to keep in mind
Instagram limits how often an account can post through tools and removes posts that repeat the same text and hashtags across many accounts. Use the Paid partnership label for sponsored content and keep hashtags relevant. Read Instagram’s own Help Center for the current rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I schedule Instagram Reels directly?
Yes. Reels up to 90 seconds publish at the scheduled time with a cover frame and the option to share to the feed. Longer Reels go out as reminders.
Can I schedule a first comment with hashtags?
Yes, on Essentials and above. The comment is posted a few seconds after the post and can use a saved hashtag group.
Why did my Instagram connection work but posts fail?
Usually a personal account or an account not linked to a Facebook Page. Switch to Business or Creator, link a Page and reconnect.
Can I schedule Instagram carousels with video?
Yes. A carousel can mix up to 20 images and videos; each item gets its own alt text.
Do I need a Facebook account?
Yes, because Instagram publishing runs through Meta’s business tools, which require a Facebook Page linked to the Instagram account.
